What is the difference between liposuction and a tummy tuck?

For patients who have loose and sagging skin around the abdominal area as a result of extreme weight loss the only option is to surgically remove the skin, this is commonly referred to as a tummy tuck. Liposuction doesn’t address skin or muscle tissue, it simply sucks fat out from the body via small incisions.

Although very different procedures they are often performed together given the patient is suitable for both procedures.

How can I prepare for liposuction surgery?

It is worth noting that liposuction is not an alternative to traditional methods of weight loss. Liposuction is ideal for patients who have areas they simply cannot shift through exercise or healthy diet alone. We would advise patients to bear this in mind before applying for the procedure.

What is the minimum age for liposuction surgery?

Due to the fact that the human body doesn’t fully develop until the later teens, it is our policy not to operate on any patient under the age of 18. Conversely however as long as the patient is in good health there is no real maximum age limit, so long as the patient is in good health.

How long does the procedure take?

The actual procedure itself can take anywhere from 1-3 hours depending on how much fat needs to be removed?

How long is the healing process?

Everyone heals differently and although the results of liposuction surgery are apparent immediately it usually takes 4-6 weeks until the patient is fully healed.

Will I need to stay the night at the hospital?

In some cases we are able to perform the surgery under a local anaesthetic which allows patients to return home the same day as surgery however in cases where large amounts of fat are removed we apply a general anaesthetic in which case we require the patients to stay overnight at the hospital.

What procedures can be combined with liposuction?

For patients who have loose sagging skin around the abdominal area, usually as a result of extreme weight loss we would advise a liposuction to be combined with a tummy tuck otherwise known as an Abdominoplasty.

Will there be any scarring?

Liposuction works by inserting a thin tipped vacuum style tool through a number of very small incisions. Scarring will depend on the patients natural disposition towards healing however our surgeons are renowned for their ability to produce natural looking results that are hard to detect.
