20 million cosmetic procedures were carried out worldwide in 2014, with women accounting for 86.3% of the total amount and men accounting for 13.7% according to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Trends in cosmetic surgery can change every year, with different procedures being pushed into the limelight. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) noticed that in 2014 there was a shift towards more subtle tweaks to appearance rather than extreme surgery; with the likes of eyelid surgery and face lifts becoming more popular amongst the British public as opposed to tummy tucks and nose jobs. People appeared to want a refreshed and youthful look and although figures dropped overall for cosmetic procedures, there was still a very obvious trend.
It may be fair to say that cosmetic surgery procedures have always been more popular amongst women, with men not as keen on going under the knife. While this may be true, there has been a gradual increase over the last few years in male cosmetic surgery; the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) noted that procedures for men had risen 43% since 2013 in the US. Their data actually shows that there has been a 273% increase in the number of procedures performed on men since they began collecting data in 1997 and it seems that men are now starting to consider their options to maintain a youthful appearance just like women.
Over the years there is often a shift in what are the most popular cosmetic procedures, both surgical and non-surgical, but there can be the same few surgeries that always make an appearance in the top 10. Due to the ‘tweak not tuck’ trend of 2014, the most popular cosmetic surgeries saw a more conservative list of procedures with blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, and face lifts up there at the top for men and women combined. Breast augmentation took the top spot but did see a 23% decrease from the year before.
According to statistics from BAAPS, blepharoplasty, face/neck lift, breast reduction, liposuction and rhinoplasty were the top 5 surgical procedures for men and women combined in 2014, but when you look at the genders separately you can see a definitive pattern in the preferred procedures.
Women accounted for 91% of all procedures performed in the UK 2014 and the figures from BAAPS showed that although breast augmentation was the most popular, the other most common procedures included (in order of popularity):
In the US, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the top 5 surgical procedures for women in 2014 included breast augmentation, nose reshaping, liposuction, eyelid surgery and face lifts.
In the UK, men only accounted for 9% of all cosmetic procedures during 2014 but there were still 10 very distinct popular surgical procedures:
While this is a very similar list to women’s popular procedures, the order is slightly different as priorities vary between the genders in terms of appearance, and the numbers for men are much lower.
In the US, the top 5 surgical procedures for men in 2014 were as follows; nose reshaping, eyelid surgery, breast reduction, liposuction and face lifts. This, again, is very similar to women’s most popular procedures with a few differences!
ASAPS found from their data that there has been a significant increase in particular procedures for men over the last 5 years, including blepharoplasty which is up 34%, male breast reduction up by 33%, face lifts up 44% and Botox up by 84%.
A lot of the most common cosmetic surgeries appear to be procedures that produce subtle enhancements and improvements as opposed to huge body-transforming surgery. Procedures like blepharoplasty and brow lifts can have a very positive effect on your appearance without doing anything too drastic, saving yourself the stress and money of undergoing major surgery.
While statistics show that men are still not undergoing as much cosmetic surgery as women, it is clear that both genders are not too dissimilar in the procedures they choose.
