4 top tips for choosing the right surgeon for your new boobs

Breast enhancements have always been one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures for women in the UK, and around the world. In 2013, there were 11,135 breast augmentation procedures and 5,476 breast reduction procedures performed in the UK alone.

Breast surgery can help you regain your confidence and give you a new lease in life. However, as with any type of cosmetic surgery, this is not something you should rush into. It is vital to take the time to think about why you want this procedure and what your expectations are. Because any cosmetic surgery is highly personal, you will also wish to ensure the surgeon performing it is the very best available. But how do you go about deciding which surgery or practice to visit for your treatment?

1) Make sure your surgeon is registered with the GMC

The GMC, or General Medical Council, is an independent body, tasked with protecting, promoting, and maintaining the health and safety of the public when dealing with medical practitioners. They regulate the medical industry in the UK, keeping an up to date register of qualified doctors, and setting the standards for them to follow. Furthermore, there are separate registers for different specialties so check carefully that the surgeon is qualified in their field, for example the Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Specialist Register. Finally, cosmetic surgery is not yet a part of NHS training so ensure that the surgeon has undertaken a proper cosmetic surgery fellowship.

All surgeons at Cosmetic Surgery Partners are fully trained and accredited on the GMC Specialist register. They have also undertaken hands-on cosmetic surgery fellowships.

2) Pick a surgeon who specialises in breast surgery procedures

As with anything in life, you will feel confident knowing that the person you are dealing with specialises in the procedure you are looking for. With a range of different options available to you, knowing you are with an expert in their field will give you confidence that you have made the right choice. You will no doubt have questions, so want to make sure that you can receive advice that is right for you.

Miles Berry specialises in breast augmentation surgery, and is credited with developing and introducing the ABBA breast augmentation technique in the UK. His work has been widely recognised, having been awarded the BAPRAS Aesthetic Prize, both in 2011 and 2012. Miles has also co-authored a number of books and papers, including Oncoplastic Breast SurgeryAdverse Capsular Contracture and The Good Boob Bible.

3) Ask if they are members of any professional bodies

While it is a requirement that all medical practitioners are registered with the GMC, there are a range of different professional bodies which doctors and surgeons have the option to join. Membership of external professional bodies is a great way to gauge the experience of your potential surgeon, as well as their reputation within the wider industry.

Our surgeons are members of a range of professional bodies, including the Royal College of Surgeons, the British Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetics Surgeons, the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons and the UK Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.

4) Ask to see examples of past work

For any surgery, you will want to know that you are in good hands, and will want an idea of the kind of results you can expect. During any consultation, you should always ask to see examples of past procedures the surgeon has performed – these are usually in the form of “before and after” photos.

At Cosmetic Surgery Partners, not only do we have an extensive list of successful procedures, our surgeons have been featured on a number of TV shows, including Extreme MakeoverMake Me PerfectCosmetic Surgery School and Botched up Bodies – all due to their reputations for consistently high quality work.

By following these top tips, you can make sure that you pick the right surgeon for your breast surgery and ensure you get the best possible results.
