Cosmetic Surgery is on the Rise for Men

While trends change constantly from year to year when it comes to cosmetic surgery, there is generally a bit of a pattern when you look at the bigger picture. Over the years, men have become just as conscious about their appearance as women are. Even though figures appear to have dropped during 2015, the pattern of male cosmetic surgery still suggests there is a high rate of procedures being carried out year upon year. As grooming and looking after your appearance is now very much the norm for men, the attitude towards cosmetic surgery has also changed.

Trends in male cosmetic surgery

Across the world, statistics have revealed a growing interest in cosmetic surgery amongst men. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) recognised that the notion of cosmetic procedures being exclusively for women is no longer a truth, with rates of male plastic surgery on a constant increase since 2000. A growing number of men want to feel comfortable in their own skin, with the number of cosmetic procedures for men having increased 88% since 1997.

Men continue to count for around 1 in 10 cosmetic surgery procedures. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) collected figures that show in 2013, men underwent 4,757 procedures which was up 16% from the previous year. During 2013, cosmetic surgery trends in the UK for men showed:

  • 9% increase in male rhinoplasty
  • 17% increase in male blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)
  • 24% increase in male breast reduction (gynaecomastia)
  • 28% increase in male liposuction

In 2014, men worldwide had around 2.5 million cosmetic procedures which was around 13.7% of the total number of procedures. While this may not appear a lot, this is still a high number for the male demographic. Eyelid surgery showed to be particularly prevalent.

Global trends

Other particular trends across the globe have revealed that depending on where you live, you may require differing results. For example, in New York City youth-enhancing cosmetic surgery is popular, meaning both men and women would look to an eye lift or neck lift. In 2013 Germany were discovered to have the most amount of penis enlargement treatments, while other nationalities such as Middle Eastern men looked to eye lifts and liposuction.

While women are still bothered about carrying extra weight around their stomach, hips or thighs, men appeared to be more bothered about ‘good hair and a slim waistline’.
